Epoxy flooring in Sunbury usually starts with an old slab. Many homes here have basement floors marked by decades of patches, paint and spills. Garage floors take snowmelt and road salt every winter. Downtown, older business floors often have tile that must come up before a coating goes down.
SF Huling is based in Lock Haven, up the same West Branch that meets the North Branch at Sunbury. Epoxy floor coatings are our main work, in flake and metallic systems for garages, basements and commercial floors. We also tear out old flooring and handle concrete grinding and floor prep under the same roof. Call or text (570) 772-2721 for a free estimate.

Census Bureau estimates show about half of Sunbury's homes were built before 1940. Across Northumberland County, that share is about 38 percent. Nearly 9 in 10 homes in the city were built before 1980. Fewer than 1 in 100 of the city's homes were built after 2000.
Those numbers point to old basement floors. A slab that old has often been patched, painted or stained along the way. Glue left behind by old carpet or tile is common too. Old black glue under 9 by 9 tile gets tested first, as our guide to asbestos floor tile removal in Pennsylvania explains.
A coating needs clean, open concrete to grip, so grinding and prep come first. We grind off old paint and glue and fill minor cracks as part of the prep. Then basement floor epoxy gives you a hard floor you can sweep and mop.
Sunbury, the Northumberland County seat, is a river city. It sits on the east bank of the Susquehanna, where the North and West branches meet. In 1951 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a floodwall along the city's riverfront. The wall was raised in 2003.
That wall has protected the city from more than a dozen major floods. In June 1972, Hurricane Agnes pushed the river to a crest of 35.8 feet at Sunbury, and the wall held. For a basement floor, the first step is a moisture check. We check the slab before we coat it, wherever the house sits in town. Epoxy cannot bond properly to a wet slab or in high humidity. If a slab stays damp, it is not ready for a coating yet.
Central Pennsylvania winters are hard on garage floors. Snowmelt and road salt ride in on your tires and drip onto the slab. Bare concrete soaks up that salty water, and the stains build year after year.
In a city with this many older homes, plenty of garage slabs have been down for decades. After grinding, garage floor epoxy turns that old slab into one seamless surface. Salty slush stays on top of the coating, where a squeegee or mop takes it off.
A garage is a good fit for flake epoxy floors. Colored flakes are broadcast into the base coat, and a durable clear topcoat goes over them. You get a textured floor that sweeps clean after a snowy week.
The Sunbury Historic District covers much of the older city between Arch and Chestnut streets. Its 238 contributing buildings span the central business district and the residential areas around it. The district joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
Older commercial buildings tend to carry layers underfoot. Shops, restaurants and offices may have old tile or VCT that has to come up before a coating goes down. Our tile removal takes up the tile along with the thinset or adhesive under it. Then we grind the slab down to clean concrete.
