Epoxy flooring in Shamokin, PA starts with the slab you have, and here that slab is often old. In this coal-region city, a basement floor may have spent decades beside an oil tank or a coal stove. Each winter, bare garage floors soak up road salt and slush from your tires. Downtown, older shop and office floors often carry tile or glue that must come up first.
SF Huling is based in Lock Haven, and our service area reaches Shamokin and the towns around it. Epoxy floor coating is our main service, with flake or metallic systems for homes and businesses. Floor demolition is our second line, and concrete grinding and floor prep readies the old slab for its coating. Call or text (570) 772-2721 for a free estimate.

Shamokin is a city of older homes. Census Bureau estimates show about two in three homes in Shamokin were built before 1940. That is well above Northumberland County as a whole, at about 38 percent.
More than 9 in 10 homes in the city were built before 1980. Fewer than 1 in 100 homes in the city were built in 2000 or later. Over the decades, basement slabs in homes this old pick up paint, patches, glue and old tile. Older garage floors carry the same layers.
Grinding takes the slab back to bare concrete, the surface a coating can bond to. In Shamokin's older homes, any 9 by 9 tile or black glue gets tested before a grinder touches it. For more on that step, see our post on asbestos floor tile removal in Pennsylvania.
Shamokin sits at the western edge of the Anthracite Coal Region, surrounded by Coal Township. Hard coal mined in the region became the basis of much of the town's industry. Shamokin is also home to the Cameron/Glen Burn Colliery culm bank, a mountain of mine waste.
Oil and coal still heat many homes here. Census Bureau estimates show more than 4 in 10 occupied homes in the city heat with fuel oil or kerosene. About 1 in 13 homes in Coal Township still heat with coal, against fewer than 1 in 100 statewide.
Decades beside an oil tank or a coal stove can work stains, soot and coal dust into a basement slab. A flooring contractor's guide names coating unground or contaminated concrete as the single most common cause of epoxy floor failure. So before any basement floor epoxy goes down, we grind the slab to clean concrete. The slab also gets a moisture check, since epoxy cannot bond properly to a wet slab.
Shamokin's average January temperature is about 26 degrees. Through the cold months, your tires carry snowmelt, road salt and grit onto the garage floor. Bare concrete absorbs that salty water, and an older slab shows the marks of many winters.
Plenty of older garage floors here also carry old paint, oil stains or patches. We grind all of that off first. On the freshly ground slab, garage floor epoxy forms one seamless surface. Meltwater sits on the coating, and a mop takes it up.
Garage slabs take hard use, and flake epoxy floors are a good match. We broadcast colored flakes over the base coat until it is fully covered. A durable clear topcoat goes on last. After a slushy week, the floor wipes clean.
Shamokin was a borough from 1864 and became a city in 1949. In the 1800s it grew into an industrial center, with silk mills and ironworks alongside the coal mines. Thomas Edison set up the Edison Illuminating Company of Shamokin in 1882. In 1883, the Shamokin power station on Independence Street started up.
Older storefront, office and rental floors downtown often carry tile, VCT or glued-down flooring. Before a coating goes down, that old flooring has to come up, and tile removal is often the first step. We scrape up the thinset or glue under the tile, then grind the slab to bare concrete.
Downtown floors like these call on the 30 years of commercial flooring experience behind SF Huling. Once the slab is bare, commercial epoxy flooring gives a storefront or office a tough, seamless floor.
