Salt is the problem. PennDOT crews in this district wet high-volume roads with salt brine before a storm hits. That brine rides home on your tires and drips onto the garage floor. Bare concrete soaks it up, then freezes and thaws until the top layer flakes off.
Paint does not hold up either. Hot tires pull cheap coatings off the slab in strips. Garage floor epoxy works differently, because grinding opens the concrete and the coating bonds into it. Salt and melted snow sit on the surface, and they wipe up.
Lewisburg garages vary a lot. Behind the Market Street houses you find small one-car garages on old slabs. Out in East Buffalo and Kelly townships, newer homes have two-car and three-car garages. Both take a coating, and the prep work is what changes.
Published housing data for the 17837 ZIP counts roughly 1,600 homes built in 1939 or earlier. That is a lot of old basements. The slabs down there are often rough, dusty and patched. A coating gives you a hard surface you can sweep, and it brightens a dark room.

After the tear-out, the slab usually needs work. Old adhesive, thinset and paint have to come off before a coating will stick, and diamond grinding does that. Minor cracks and spalls get filled as part of the prep. New flooring, if that is the plan, goes in by another trade.

Those floors get foot traffic six or seven days a week. Out on the US 15 corridor there are shops, service bays and back-of-house rooms with different problems.
