Concrete grinding is the step that decides whether your new floor holds. We run diamond grinders across the slab to cut off old coatings, paint, glue and thinset. What is left is bare concrete with an open, slightly rough surface. Most jobs start here, right after we finish tearing out the old flooring.
We do this prep for our own epoxy floor coatings and for floors that other trades install. The goal is the same either way. The slab has to be clean and open enough for the next material to bond to it. We work on homes and businesses across Central Pennsylvania from our base in Lock Haven.

A coating only holds if it can grip the concrete. Many slabs are steel troweled to a hard, tight surface when they are poured. Older ones carry a sealer or a leftover curing compound. Coatings put over either one tend to peel away in sheets.
Diamond grinding cuts that top layer off and leaves texture behind. The industry rates that texture on a concrete surface profile scale. Thicker coatings need a rougher slab than thin ones, so we grind to suit the system going down.
There is a check you can run yourself in about a minute. Pour a little water on the bare floor and watch it. Water that soaks in and darkens the concrete is a good sign. Water that beads on top means the slab is sealed and has to be ground.
Most of our prep work runs ahead of a coating job. A garage floor coating starts with a full grind of the slab, edges and door openings included. Failed paint, old sealer and any coating that is lifting all come off first.
Then the high spots come down. Trowel ridges, humps and the edges of old patches get ground flat so the finish sits even. Cracks and small spalled areas get filled while the slab is open. That puts the coating on solid concrete.
Grinding concrete makes a fine dust that contains silica. Our grinders run with vacuum dust collection, which pulls most of it off the floor as we work. We also check the slab for moisture, because a damp slab can push a coating loose from underneath.
Some slabs we grind never get a coating from us. They end up under tile, vinyl plank or carpet that another trade installs. Our part is the concrete underneath, and the installer takes it from there.
After a tile floor comes out, the slab is usually left covered in thinset ridges. Glue from vinyl and carpet leaves its own film behind. Both can telegraph through a new floor or block the new adhesive, so they get ground off. Flooring makers also publish flatness limits, and a common one is 3/16 of an inch across a 10 foot span.
Commercial buildings get the same treatment. A shop or a retail space needs the same flat, clean slab before new flooring goes down. When the new surface is a coating, we stay on and handle the coating for the space.
