Flake epoxy flooring is the standard system for garage and basement floors. Colored vinyl flake gets thrown into a wet base coat until the base cannot hold another chip. A clear topcoat goes over the flake and seals it in. What you get is a floor with color and texture in place of bare gray concrete.
A full broadcast flake epoxy floor covers the slab wall to wall, so none of the base color shows through. We put the same system down on epoxy garage floors and on basement floor coatings. Flake is vinyl, cut into small chips and mixed into color blends. The chips get thrown into the wet base coat and set into the resin. They end up inside the floor, held between the base coat and the clear topcoat. Chip size changes the look, and quarter inch flake is the common pick in a garage.
Every job starts with prep. We open the slab up with diamond grinding, vacuum the dust, then fill minor cracks and spalls. The colored base coat goes down next, and the flake goes into it while it is still wet. We keep broadcasting until the base coat stops taking chips.
The base coat has to cure before the next step, so a flake floor runs across more than one day. Then the surface gets scraped and vacuumed to knock down loose chips and sharp edges. The clear topcoat goes on last. We tell you when the floor is ready to walk on and when it can take a vehicle.
Flake comes in a wide range of colors, and a blend mixes several shades together. Grays, tans, browns, blacks and whites are the usual base for a garage or a basement. The flake floors on this site are our own work. Gray flake went into two-car garages, and a tan blend into a finished basement.
A blend also breaks the surface up visually. Dust, tire marks and patched cracks blend into the pattern instead of standing out. A solid color floor shows every speck and every repair. That is a big part of why flake fits a working garage or an older basement slab.
Full broadcast flake leaves a texture underfoot as well. The chip edges give the surface more grip than a smooth gloss finish. The floor still cleans up with a soft broom or a dust mop.
Garages are the most common spot. Central Pennsylvania winters mean road salt and brine ride home on every vehicle. It drips onto the slab all season and soaks into bare concrete. A flake floor seals the slab, so the salt sits on the coating and mops up.
Basements are the other half of the work. Older slabs in this region are rough, patched and often painted at some point. Flake covers all of that and brightens a rec room, a laundry room or a workshop.

Diamond grinding opens the concrete so the coating can grip it, and it takes off old paint, sealer and adhesive. Cracks and small spalls get filled before anything is coated.
The base coat rolls out over the prepped slab. On a flake floor the chips get broadcast into the wet base coat, then the loose flake gets scraped off.
A clear topcoat seals the floor and gives it the surface you walk on. Cure time moves with the temperature inside, and we go over the finished floor with you before we leave.
